Americans in full force on Thursday!
The Americans will be out in full force on Thursday at the New York Open as all but one match will feature a player from the United States competing inside NYCB LIVE home of the The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Second-seed Sam Querrey and the top-seeded Bryan Brothers will make their tournament debut in a can’t miss night session. Querrey will be up first and plays Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny for the third time in their careers.
The 12th ranked Querrey is looking to get on track in 2018. He has played just four matches so far this year which includes a recent win over Laslo Djere in Davis Cup play. Querrey has won each of the previous two showdowns with Youzhny.
The second half of the evening’s doubles header will feature Bob and Mike Bryan squaring off against the French team of Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin.
The Bryan’s were three-time champions of the Memphis Open, but are excited to make their debut in the tournament’s new home in New York.
“There’s an electricity from the New York crowd,†said Mike Bryan earlier this year. “The fans bring an incredible amount of energy, while in other cities, tennis crowds are traditional and subdued. It’s a great vibe. New York fans are loud and seem to love the sport of tennis just as much we do.â€
Last year’s U.S. Open finalist and top-seed Kevin Anderson will be the final match on Stadium Court in the Day Session. The South African meets American qualifier Ernesto Escobedo, who has won three straight matches so far at NYCB LIVE coming through qualifying.
Kicking things off on Stadium Court on Thursday is young American Frances Tiafoe, who came back from a set down to beat Sebastian Korda on Monday night. He will play longtime pro Dudi Sela of Israel, who upended eighth-seed Nikoloz Basilashvili in the opening round.
Rounding out singles play is the sixth-seed Ryan Harrison taking on Ivo Karlovic. Harrison, last year’s Memphis Open champion, will look to slow down the all-time aces leader for a chance at the quarterfinals.
Harrison will also be competing in doubles over on Grandstand as he pairs with Steve Johnson to take on the fourth-seeds Robert Lindstedt and Franko Skugor. Following that match, Basilashvili and Radu Albot will play Treat Huey and Peter Gojowczyk.
Tickets for Thursday February 15th matches are available on ticketmaster.com
