New York Open Crowns Jack Lin As College Wild Card Champion
The New York Open has crowned its College Wild Card Invitational champion and that winner is Jack Mingjie Lin of Columbia University.
Three exciting days of play took place in Flushing, New York, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Sixteen local universities were represented, include Adelphi, Army, Binghamton, Columbia, Concordia, Cornell, Farleigh Dickinson University, Hofstra, NYIT, Princeton, Queen’s College, St. Francis College, St. John’s, and Wagner College. The invitational began with 32 players, which whittled down to four for Saturday’s semifinals. Players from Columbia University and Cornell powered through for the semifinals spots, which included Alafia Aveni (Cornell) vs. William Matheson (Columbia), Lev Kazakov (Cornell) vs. Jack Mingjie Lin (Columbia). Lin and Aveni won their semifinals matches to face-off in the finals.
On Sunday, Columbia’s Lin defeated Alafia Ayeni of Cornell 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-6(5) in an intense and thrilling 3.5 hour match.Congratulations to Lin for winning the New York Open College Wild Card Invitational and earning his spot into the main draw wildcard to the New York Open, held February 9-7 in Long Island. Lin will be the feature match for College Night on Tuesday, February 12, 2019.
“I’m super excited,” Lin said. “I’ve been looking forward to this event for so long. As soon as I heard my coach say I had an opportunity here, I was just super excited to be a part of this wild card event.”
“The New York Open is excited to offer this opportunity for the colleges players,” said Peter Lebedevs, New York Open Assistant Tournament Director. “The level of play was tremendous and we look forward to having Jack compete against the world’s best. Tuesday night will be college night and we hope to have the coliseum filled with fans – it’s only $10 for a ticket with a college ID that night.”
